I genuinely do. There’s something special about them - whether morning or night, whether summer or winter, they represent something.

I don’t know what it is. I have some guesses, though.

I find that people are more relaxed here, generally speaking. Sure, there are nervous fliers, but all in all, there’s a genuine pace to the airport - perhaps it’s because there are no drivers on airplanes. Me, when I drive, I tense up just a little bit and am unable to relax because, well, I’m in control. If my attention slips and my focus drifts, then the drive becomes all the more unpleasant. At the airport, though, I don’t have to worry about it. No tollbooth lines, no bottleneck concerns - here I am just a passenger. That’s nice sometimes. I am more relaxed here - and despite anxieties about flying and the things that linger on the other side of the flight - people generally seem more relaxed here.

There’s something magnetic about the airport, too. Something intimate and wonderful that occurs at the arrivals gate, where people reunite after hiatuses long and short. Something precocious about the children who marvel at the enormity of the big birds that carry them to destinations exotic and mundane with an odd elegance. Something beautiful, in the joys of a shared destination, in and among the couples traveling together - some for the first time, some for the millionth - it’s as strong a metaphor as our world can provide.

I travel alone, generally, when I’m at the airport. I’m an infrequent flier; a flight (whether to destinations near or far) means that something exceptional and different is happening in my life. Perhaps that’s a good reason for my optimism. Perhaps it’s because I’m flying alone - no howling children, nobody to keep track of, nobody worried about my whereabouts - that might be why I welcome this instead of dread what it could be.

Again, I’m not sure. And I’m not sure that I want to know, necessarily - there’s something nice about the mystery when it comes to the moments that are intriguingly special.

Safe travels, then, to wherever you’re going - whether it’s some corner of the world or just the other side of the room.

quote-book:

It was filmed at a Swell Season concert in Los Angeles on November 18 (Wednesday), and it features actor Jason Segel (probably best known for playing Marshall on “How I Met Your Mother,” but noted for roles on cult TV shows “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared” as well as movies like “Knocked Up” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” - which Segel wrote as well as starred in).

In the video, Segel sings a funny, catchy song wherein he attempts to woo “Swell Season fans” with a chance to “have sex with Jason Segel” primarily by making the chorus of the song an actual phone number: 315-329-6673.

This evening, I was at my buddy Ethan’s place with some other friends, and during a lull, I showed my friend Mike the video. While doing it, on a complete whim, I dialed the number. I expected to get some kind of recording or something, to be honest.

Instead, the phone began to ring. After about the 4th ring, a girl’s voice picked up. “Jason Segel’s phone.”

WHAAAAAA?

I stammered. “Who is this?”

“This is Jason’s friend, Kelly.”

“Oh. Um, is Jason there?”

“Sure. Hang on a second.”

And then, a dude whose voice was instantly recognizable as Jason Segel came on. “Hey dude, what’s going on?”

I was blown away. I stammered away, then handed the phone over to Mike, who handed the phone over to Ethan, who handed it back to me. All in total we talked for about 5 minutes. The three of us can verify that it was indeed Jason Segel. Here are some highlights from the conversation:

The reason why the phone number is a 315 number is because he picked up the phone when he was in Upstate New York. He mentioned doing a show up there.

He let out an audible “aw” when I mentioned “Undeclared”

He’s still in the writing stage of “The Muppet Movie” remake that he’s doing, but it’s still in the works. He had no hints for getting somebody cast (Ethan tried to put in a good word for his girlfriend Katie, an actress) beyond getting their info to the casting director.

He’s going to do a 5 song set and will be opening up for Maroon 5 in Vegas on New Year’s. He’s hoping it will go over well and may do it again, he’ll see.

He wasn’t doing much tonight - just staying in, bottle of wine and a movie.

He couldn’t think of any good movies involving dinosaurs.

His only request? That I go on YouTube and let people know that I actually talked with him. So, I did that. If you go on the YouTube link above you’ll see other testimonials of a similar ilk.

So, yeah. That happened.

Jason Segel: good dude.

Fuck yeah, Jason Segel.

Connection that I didn’t make until today: the guitarist...

Connection that I didn’t make until today: the guitarist from “The Commitments” grew up to be Glen Hansard…

The Swell Season - Feeling The Pull

The Swell Season - Feeling The Pull

Alexi Murdoch - Love You more

Alexi Murdoch - Love You more

Photo

Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt's Oblique Strategies

Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt's Oblique Strategies

RIP Jean Claude.
